The parish church museum of the Virgin of the Assumption stands majestically in the highest part of the urban nucleus, on the old Arab castle of Bekiren. The set testifies to the passage of history: if we look, for example, at the base of the main façade, we will observe how the foundations have been directly carved in the rock. The recently restored church uncovers some delicious pastel colors that attenuate the baroque load and neoclassical stiffness of the two styles that print the interior. The frescoes of the vault, the altarpieces of the altar, as well as the baptismal font of the 15th century are elements to be highlighted in this first space. In a side chapel, the only architectural element preserved from the earthquake suffered is one of the most interesting mural paintings. Through the rooms adjacent to the temple a patrimonial ensemble is distributed and reflects the influence of the parish in the past: a collection of paintings some of which are signed by such well-known names as Sorolla, the school of Joan de Joanes, a liturgical vestment with precious embroideries of the XV century, jewels and sumptuous chalices. In short, the whole religious ensemble, both artistic and architectural, offers a number of reading keys for those who know how to interpret it: a more artistic one, through the construction itself and the restoration tastings that are visible in certain points and that allow us to appreciate the forcefulness of the performance. The other is more ecclesiastical, which allows us to deepen into the symbolic and evangelizing language of Christian culture.
