Atzeneta is a town in the Vall d'Albaida located between the Sierra del Benicadell and the agricultural plain. Thanks to the springs at the foot of the limestone mountain, such as the Fuente del Pueblo and the Fuente del Port, the Atzenetins of past centuries have enjoyed a great wealth of running water, which they used to drink, wash, water horses, soak esparto grass and lupins, water the orchards, move the millstones of flour mills, chop the esparto with hammers, etc. Water was and is a great source of wealth, and has given rise in historical time to a varied heritage that we invite you to discover with the route of the lavaderos.
The laundries route is a route that runs through the Acequia del Port and shows us the town's laundries, spaces traditionally reserved for women. Through this tour the visitor will be able to learn about the role of women throughout history, in aspects as important as the economy, urban planning, ethnography, culture, the labor field and the health sector, among others.
The Acequia del Port, from which the orchards of Atzeneta, El Palomar and Albaida have been irrigated for more than a millennium, and different flour mills have been put into operation, is a heritage treasure inherited from the civilization of 'Al-Andalus ( VIII-XIII centuries). The water from the source of the Port fountain was captured and carried to Atzeneta through a main ditch that winds through the capterreres the corrals of the town's houses, to create a beautiful landscape and sound picture. The houses next to the cash register of the acequia have exit doors, with slabs that act as pontoonswalkways, and other lower doors, where the women have direct access to the water from the acequia, which they use directly to washscrub without leaving home.
