HISTORY

Albaida is situated in the region of the Albaida Valley, at the south of the València province in the Valencian Community. Its 36 km² of extension limit with the townships of Aielo of Malferit, Olleria, Bufali, Palomar, Atzeneta of Albaida, Muro, Agres, Benissoda and Agullent. The strategic situation of Albaida, above the lefthand bank of the river Albaida and with an average latitude above sea level of approximately 320m, it has facilitated the settlement of different cultures over the centuries. At present, Albaida has 6031 inhabitants. The name Albaida comes from the Arabic "Al-Baida", which comes to mean "La Blanca", an apt name conceived in the Al-Andalus period due to the white color of the earth that illustrates the undulating landscape of our region. The township of Albaida is divided in three zones, the south zone, of difficult orography, is the most montainous and rugged because of the presence of the mountain range of Agullent and of the Benicadell among the sides of which is born the Albaida river. Higlights The Ombria of Benicadell, place protected since January 2006 and that stands out for his big forest value and his rich archaeologic deposits. In the intermediate zone there is the urban core of the town where we find a rich historical heritage presided over by the Clos de la Vila, the old walled city, which houses the Palace of the Milà i Aragó, the Arciprestal Church of the Assumption of the Mare de Déu, the International Puppet Museum, the House-museum of the painter José Segrelles, the permanent exhibition of Belenes and Dioramas, as well as parts belonging to the canvas of the walls such as the Portal de la Vila, the Puerta de ValènciaAljorf, the Portal Majorthe Barbican of Sant Cristòfol. Lastly, in the northern zone the cultivation fields predominate, where the fruit trees of dry land, olive trees, carob trees and the vine stand out. The urban nucleus of Albaida is divided into two well differentiated areas: the historical center, where we find buildings that go from the XIII to the XIX century, and a new area of expansion of the city with contemporary architecture and where the commercial area of the city is concentrated. The historic center is made up of seven neighborhoods: the Clos de la Vila (1248), the Raval Jussà (1248-1400), the Raval Sobirà (14th century), the volta de la Processó (XV-XVII century), the neighborhood del Real (1680-1750), the neighborhood of San Antonio (1771-1800) and the district of l'Aljorf, a former Moorish farmhouse rebuilt in the 17th century. Sitting on a hill with an elevation of 317 meters above sea level and bounded by the river Albaida and the Bouet ravine, nowadays covered by the avenue de la Fira, the Clos de la Vila brings together the main attractions of the city . As for the weather, it should be noted that there is a great contrast between the cold months, with an average temperature of 7 ° C, and the hot months, where the average shoots up to 27 ° C. Annual rainfall is around 700 mm, with the months of March, May and October being among the rainiest. Albaida has an excellent network of roads and rail that allow easy access and be perfectly communicated. The main road routes are the N-340 and the A-7, which represent quick access from the main capitals. The arrival by train can be made thanks to the RENFE commuter service on the València route. North-Xativa-Alcoy. There are also regular bus lines that travel daily between Alcoy-València and Gandia-Ontinyent.
