It stands on a space at the foot of walls and open to the ravine of Sant Jaume-Almaig. This has been, since the sixteenth century, the nerve center of the city's public activities, which is why it concentrates a significant part of the most relevant historical buildings: Casa del ConsellOld Town Hall. Presides the square the old house of the Consell, also denominated the Room and the old City council, built in the first half of the XVIth century in front of the medieval fortifications. In the western part is the old Almudín, converted into prisons in the following century. At the end of the 16th century, the Mostassaf fish market was added to the eastern part. The old town hall still houses municipal offices. Its current appearance is the result of a major reform of 1765. In the mid-twentieth century various reforms were made that have hidden much of its original  appearance. In August the monumental wooden castle is installed, scene of the embassies of the festivities of Moors and Christians. The  Palace of the Counts of Torrefiel, building of the XV-XVIII centuries,  is located opposite the old Almudín. It serves as the current headquarters of the City Council. Inside there is a magnificent gothic stone gate (beginning of the 16th century), identical to the one in the golden hall of the Palau de la Generalitat of Valencia, and a staircase also of minced stone and of the same chronology, with various figures in grotesque attitudes in the bases of its pillars.
