CASTELLÓ DE RUGAT

Throughout its history it has had different names such as: Castelló del Duque (referring to the time when it was part of the Duchy of Gandia, and belonged to the Borgia family) and Castelló de les “Gerres” (in clear reference to the artisanal manufacture of the pitchers to store all kinds of liquids (wine, water, oil).

At present it has derived in the ceramic production of bricks, blocks and tiles. The most outstanding monuments in the municipality are: the old Borgia palace, the most important civil building in the town, today, only the remains of the walls remain. The "Casa del Fang" (museum of clay crafts, and workshop place for learning). The "Forn de la Gerreria" of the s. XVIII, which was part of an old artisan song shop, which abandoned its activity in the early 20th century. The Medieval CisternCistern, with a circular structure in the shape of a pinnacle, collected the water that came down from the hermitage for its later use. Numerous are the water constructions that exist within the municipality, such as: the main fountain, the fountain basin and the public laundry. The municipality has notable and marked footsteps of two types of worship; The first is the Catholic, a sample of this is the Parish Church of La Asunción (built in the 16th century, with later modifications from the 17th and 18th centuries, it has a classicist structure and a Baroque interior decoration). The hermitage of San Antonio Abad and Santa Bárbara, located on a hill from which we can obtain magnificent views of the Vall; it is accessed through the Calvary path. And the second cult that was officiated to the population was the Muslim, and it was done in the Arab mosque, decorated with tiles, inside we can identify the prayer room, the mihrab, the quibla wall and the open courtyardablutions.

As for gastronomy, the following stand out: corn cakes, homemade sausages, salted sardines, baconthe different tapas in the area, including chopped wheatbaked rice, will be a good attraction of this route through the towns. Benicadell
