It is the economic and administrative capital of the Vall d'Albaida region, with a marked textile activity that dates back to the Bronze Age, around 3,500 years ago. In Islamic times, textile development was related to hydraulic architecture (water pipes and mills), it was the main source of energy until the appearance of the steam engine. The Ontinyent's society, in the fifties of the twentieth century, went from being agricultural and livestock to being a textile society. There are many companies, warehouses and shops where you can buy all kinds of textile products, as well as typical pastries and the famous Ontinyent sausages.
